Image Reading and Meaningful Spaces: Approaching the use of two- and three-dimensional space(s) in pictorial communication from a diachronic and transcultural perspective

Throughout history, pictures have been used to record, transmit, and perpetuate messages. In their creation, the space(s) used and developed by the artists – from the pages of a book to complex architectural structures – have always played an essential role. The goal of this first SEMA workshop, organised by Frederik Rogner, Temenuzhka Dimova, and Nicolle Leary, was to approach the use of space as a semiotic resource in art from various angles.
